Over 13,000 Urge Health Canada, ECCC to Curb Use of Toxic Chemical Glyphosate in Children’s Food Products

SumOfUs petition warns against toxic ingredient glyphosate found in Monsanto's popular product Roundup

A new petition from SumOfUs, an international consumer watchdog, is calling on Health Canada and Environment Climate Change Canada (ECCC) to take more serious steps to curb the use of glyphosate, a key ingredient in Monsanto’s product Roundup, which has been linked to cancer, in Canada’s food system. Specifically, the group is asking Health Canada and ECCC to reform the Pest Control Products Act by fixing the pesticide approval process, reduce the use of and exposure to pesticides and adopt the recommendations of the House of Commons Standing Committee to reform Canadian Environmental Protection Act. The petition has been signed by over 13,000 SumOfUs members.

A recently released study found that glyphosate can be found in common foods like Timbits, KD, Cheerios, Ritz Crackers, and Quaker Oatmeal.

“A topic like children’s health should never be up for debate,” said Angus Wong Campaign Manager at SumOfUs. “In continuing to allow glyphosate in our food—no matter the level—government agencies like Health Canada and ECCC send the message that profits for corporations like Pepsico and Kraft are more important than people. Such a brazen disregard for human life is a shameful and unacceptable reality that we will not continue to allow. That is why we’re taking the fight to stop glyphosate from making its way into more children’s food products throughout Canada.”

SumOfUs has previously campaigned against the glyphosate chemical throughout Europe, successfully calling on the EU Commission to extend its glyphosate licence to only 5 years instead of the 15 years that agricultural lobbyists wanted.

SumOfUs members also set a record for the highest number of public comments to Health Canada in order to save bees by calling for the ban of key bee-killing neonic pesticides. After years of sustained pressure from SumOfUs, three major bee-killing neonic pesticides were all banned.
